Saying Goodbye to a Furry Friend

Posted in Family, and Holidays

Today, my sister and my brother-in-law had to put down their family dog.  He was a larger than life black lab who loved to play and get into trouble.  We have very fond memories of him as he entered our lives shortly after Munchkin was born.  He and our puppy got along well, and they enjoyed playing together whenever we were able to visit (after we moved away).

Tired "Puppies" after a Day of Play

He was 11 1/2 years old, and he will be missed.  We are thankful for the time he was in ours lives.  Our “puppy” has been a bit down today.  It’s as if he senses something is wrong.  This loss is hitting us hard even though we’re many miles away from my sister and her family.

A loss of a pet is never easy even if he isn’t directly your own pet, but instead a pet of a family member.  Today, we are remembering are beloved pet, and we’re very grateful for the wonderful memories that we have of him.  I’m still trying to find a picture of him playing Pretty, Pretty Princess (the game) with Munchkin. (found it! see below)  He was all dressed up in the jewelry.  He ended up winning the game.  Apparently, he played the game again this past year with my nieces, and he won again.  He never lost at the game of Pretty, Pretty Princess.

(This is hitting Munchkin especially hard as she loved big T and was just making plans on what to send him for Christmas.  Plus, our “puppy” is 2 years older than big T, so that has set a few unwelcome thoughts in motion.  Prayers are welcomed.)

We are so thankful for the joy that big T brought into our lives and the lives of my sister’s family, and we’re glad that he’s no longer in pain.  We’ll miss you big T.

Today has once again reminded me to be grateful for the pets that are in our lives.  We’ve enjoyed looking over old pictures and remembering some of the pets who are no longer with us.  While we are quite sad today, we thank you Lord for giving us animals.

This post is part of the Gratitude Challenge, and a Month of Thanksgiving.

Oh Heather, I am so sorry. We were a two dog family up until this past April, our Max had to be put down. He was 10, but had many issues! He is missed, our little Bailey Girl is such a big part of our lives, she is just three but has been through so much! When she was just 12 weeks old we almost lost her to stomach issues, she has had “tummy” troubles all of her short little life, then her knee trouble, and more tummy truoble last Thanksgiving, knee surgery..it goes on and on! We haev had her since she was just 8 weeks old, picked her from the litter and would visit with her often before bringing her home! Empty nest hit me hard and she became my “baby” my heart goes out to your sister & her family & to your sweet Little Munchkin…TO some they are just dogs but to us they are a part of teh family! Prayers for your sister & her family 🙂

  3. How sad. I’m sorry, and I pray that your family will soon think of Big T with only smiles. I especially hope Munchkin can rest easy and not worry too much about your dog.

I’m laughing thinking of how good natured he must have been to tolerate Pretty, Pretty Princess. I’m sitting here playing fetch with our kitten, (she thinks she’s a dog) so I know how quickly they become a part of the family, and how well loved a good pet can be.

  4. I am so sorry to hear this! We had a black lab years ago. We currently have a Australian Shepherd. Pets have always been a big part of our family so my heart aches for you and yours. I will be praying for everyone as you grieve.

So very, very sad. It’s so hard when you have to put animals down because of age related pain/illness, or when a person purposely runs them down with a car (e.g. purposely goes up on the sidewalk to hit an animal not in the street).
    I feel your pain.
