Review: Dark Halo by Shannon Dittemore

Dark HaloDark Halo Book Description:

One halo brought sight to Brielle. Another offers sweet relief from what she sees.

Brielle can’t help but see the Celestial. Even without the halo, the invisible realm is everywhere she looks. It’s impossibly beautiful—and terrifying, especially now. Because a battle rages above Stratus, Oregon.

The Terrestrial Veil is ripping, and demons walk the streets past unseeing mortals. Dark, sticky fear drips from every face, and nightmares haunt Brielle’s sleep.

Worst of all, Jake is gone. The only boy she’s ever loved has been taken by the demon, Damien. When she receives instructions from the Throne Room leading her to Jake, she unknowingly walks into a diabolical and heartbreaking trap.

Now she’s stranded in a sulfurous desert with the Prince of Darkness himself, and he’s offering her another halo—a mirrored ring that will destroy her Celestial vision. All she has to do is wear it and she’ll see no more of the invisible world. No more fear. No more nightmares. No more demons. It’s a gift. And best of all: it comes with the promise of a future with Jake, something the Throne Room seems to be taking from her.

Will Brielle trade the beauty of the Celestial and the truth of the world around her just to feel ordinary again?

My Thoughts:

Dark Halo is the third book in the Angel Eyes Trilogy. To truly understand this book, you really need to start the series from the beginning as it’s definitely not a stand alone book. Because of this fact, my review may contain a few spoilers from the previous two books.

Dark Halo begins where Broken Wings left off – shortly after Jake was taken by demons. Brielle is scared and confused as she had a glimpse of the future and now, it looks like that future is gone. She’s afraid that she’s done something to cause that to happen. She’s concerned that she’s not good enough. All of these feelings are compounded by the fact that she can see the war between angels and demons, and she sees the fear oozing from those around her. It’s these feelings that the Prince of Darkness preys upon when he offers her a new halo – one that will take away the gift of seeing the celestial.

While this book is very much about the struggle between good (angels) and evil (demons), it’s more about the personal struggles of Brielle and to a lesser degree Jake, Marco, and Olivia. Through this story, we watch the inner struggle between good, evil, self-doubt, and self-worth. It’s a struggle that many of us face on a daily basis. Will we take the path with the least resistance? Will we hide from the truth in this world to make our lives easier? It is this story, the story of life, that is played out visually in Dark Halo.

Shannon did a great job wrapping up the series. The characters were well developed, and I was happy to learn the full back story on some of the key characters. Overall, it was a good read that I would recommend to those who enjoy religious fantasy.
