Happy Veteran’s Day 2010

Posted in Holidays, and Military Life

Over the years, Veteran’s Day has meant different things to me.  When I was younger, I didn’t completely understand the significance.  Once D joined the Corps, my understanding started to significantly grow.  His first deployment lead to a deeper understanding.  During the next deployment, he was actually gone for Veteran’s Day.  It was then that the meaning of it all truly sank in.

I sat there on the computer putting together a Veteran’s Day post to honor all of the veterans.  I looked at pictures from war after war.  Thoughts rolled through my mind ~ honor, courage, commitment ~ freedom ~ sacrifice.  The more I thought about it, the more grateful I became for my freedom and for the men and women throughout history who have fought for that freedom.

Last year, we stumbled across a local veteran’s memorial, so we spent time reading the names and remembering all those who served their country.  We’re trying to make sure that Munchkin knows the significance of Veteran’s Day.

As we observe another Veteran’s Day, I am ever grateful for the sacrifices of all of the men and women who have served our country.  I am grateful for those who are currently serving our country whether at home or abroad.  My prayers are with the troops, our leaders, and their families.

I recommend not reading the comments on this video due to foul language.

  1. Heather, Amen. I still remember when my husband’s ship would come back to port, spotting all the sailors lined up along its deck. What a feeling of pride and honor welled up! And that was in peacetime!

Thank You, Lord, for Heather’s family and their service to this country.

    Blessings,

  2. Thank you for your post–and your family’s sacrifices! I thought of you this morning and wanted to tell you Thank you for all you do as a military wife. It must be so difficult saying goodbye and all the moving. I actually do not have any veterans in my close family, and knowing D and you has made me understand all of this much better. Blessings especially today! (Now, I need to go tell Jessica something too–I was sad for her when her husband was deployed.) Really knowing you both has put this is such a clear light for me.

  3. Heather,

I have a far greater appreciation for the families with a parent in the military. My Dad was active duty when I was younger, but we never lived on base and he left the service before I was old enough to really notice. Moving about was just par for the course until we finally settled in Louisiana when I was in 4th grade. My younger sisters have no real sense of the shuffle, though.

Now my boys are experiencing a taste of it between our move for hubbie’s civilian Army job and our involvement with the homeschool group on base. Most are Air Force families with long deployments being uncommon for them. But, there are a few Army families in the mix with dad being gone for a year at a time. I’m hoping my boys will start to appreciate having both parents around (unless Dad goes TDY for work.)
