The Bible

Thanksgiving Bibles

We are blessed to have many different Bibles around the house in various translations (only a few are shown above).  Munchkin found 2 of D’s from his childhood just the other day.  I pulled out a couple of my own Bibles from when I was younger.  It’s fun looking back at the Bibles from our youth.  At the same time, it reminds us how fortunate we are to have more than one Bible in our home.  There are too many people not only abroad, but also here in the U.S. who don’t even own a Bible.

Just having Bibles sitting around doesn’t do us much good.  We need to make sure we’re actually reading the Bible for it to do us any good.  Since we never know what kind of world we may find ourselves in, we need to make sure that we’re hiding God’s Word in our hearts.  Having scripture readily available in our minds help us get through difficult times and avoid temptation.  We can call upon the scripture at any given time.

I remember being told stories of POWs who would share scriptures that they had memorized via morris code to encourage other prisoners.  Other stories included people who had no access to Bibles being able to come together and write almost the whole Bible from memory.  I honestly can’t remember the specifics of these stories, but I know that as a child, they had a real impact on me.  As an adult, I wonder if I would be able to recall that much scripture if I no longer had access to my Bible.

Today, I am very grateful that we do live in a place where we can own a Bible and memorize scripture without being persecuted or put to death.  May I never take that for granted or grow complacent in my learning of scripture.

This post is part of the Gratitude Challenge and  a Month of Thanksgiving.
