Grinding Flax Seed for the Horses

Posted in Family

I use ground flax seed in our diets on a regular basis as it is high in healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seed even makes a great egg replacement in many gluten free recipes. As we were getting ready to bring our horses home, both Munchkin and I started doing a good deal of research into nutrition for horses. We found that just like flax see is wonderful for human overall health, it’s also great for the overall well-being of horses. We learned that it can help reduce inflammation, relieve various skin conditions, alleviate symptoms of allergies, help with the…

Country Girl at Heart

Posted in Family

While I pretty much grew up in the city, I’ve always been a country girl at heart. It could have something to do with the fact that I also grew up going fishing and camping. Exploring the great outdoors and learning how to use a gun from a young age was also part of my upbringing. It should be no surprise that I ended up dating and marrying a farm boy even if he did end up taking on the title of U.S. Marine. We’ve traveled the countryside as the Marine Corps sent us from one location to the next.…

New Glasses for Munchkin

Posted in Family

With a new prescription in hand, we headed to find new frames for Munchkin. Little did we know that it was going to be a long, drawn-out process. She did not want little glasses which is what the vast majority of the frames were in the store, and I didn’t want to pay a crazy amount for the frames. This combination lead to a crazy search for frames that would work for her. Finally, we stumbled across some clearance prescription sunglasses frames that she really liked. A few days later, she was sporting her new glasses. The transition from her…

Homeschool Review: Week Ending 2/7/14

Posted in Family, and Homeschooling

It’s hard to believe that we’re getting ready to head into the second week of February. Where has time gone? This month has found us finishing up some homeschool subjects/curriculum while starting others. Munchkin wrapped up her Analytical Grammar studies this week. She found that who and whom are not her friends, but otherwise did quite well with her final. We’ll be continuing to review grammar with the Analytical Grammar Review and Reinforcement book. We may use one of their High School Reinforcement books next year, but I haven’t decided yet. She’s continuing with her Biblical Archaeology studies which she…

Phantom’s Training: Desensitizing to Rope

Posted in Family

Daniel has been working with Phantom as I haven’t felt up to getting any training done. Unfortunately, this means that currently, Phantom is only getting training once or twice a week, so his training is going slower than we would like. For us, the groundwork is extremely important as it will make for a better horse and better ride once we get back to that point. Because we follow the Clinton Anderson method with our horses, the first step is desensitizing with the tools. They’re both pretty good with the rope although Phantom can be a bit sketchy on certain…
