Dixie Horse Training: Desensitizing to Rope

Upon bringing the horses home, we realized that we were going to need to start at the very beginning to make sure their were no holes in their training. They both are hot horses and need some serious groundwork and desensitizing. For the past few days, Munchkin has be faithfully working on desensitizing Dixie to the rope. She throws the rope over and around all parts of her body until it no longer phases her. As you can see in the pictures, this part of the desensitizing doesn’t really phase her. Equine Tuesday: Curry Brush Paci

Phantom is an extremely curious horse, and he likes to test everything with his mouth. The other day, I sat my grooming kit on the ground while I was grooming him, and he proceeded to check everything over before grabbing the curry brush and mouthing it. He turned it in his mouth until he had the handle in his mouth. He then began to suck on it like a paci. Yep, that’s our crazy horse. lol!

Over the weekend, Daddy was able to finish up the roof on the stalls. Right now, they are quite content being outside in the turnout area as they like to relax in the sun. When summer comes, it will be nice for them to enjoy the shade a bit. Their water and hay is in their stalls, so we leave the stalls open which allows them to come and go as they please. They also get fed their pellets and supplements in their stalls in the morning and at night. We only close them in their stalls if we need…

By the third night of being home, Phantom and Dixie had started to really settle into their new environment. In fact, Phantom laid down during the night while the coyotes were howling away, and the dogs were barking at the coyotes. Dixie was standing guard over him which was rather cute as you’d think it would be the other way around. lol!
