Big Truths for Little KidsBig Truths for Little Kids Book Description:

Your children are a blessing from the Lord. A special gift that brings a immeasurable joy to your life as well as the responsibility of teaching them in the way of the Lord. When they are young, their potential to soak up knowledge is amazing. Because they learn not only from your teachings but also your actions, the lessons that they learn during this impressionable time will shape their lives forever. Big Truths for Little Kids can help you teach the foundations of the Christian faith to your children with an easy-to-use story format that will capture their attention and their hearts.

About the Authors:

Susan Hunt is an active mother, a pastor’s wife, and the women in the church consultant for the Presbyterian Church in America. She has a degree in Christian education from Columbia Theological Seminary.

Richie Hunt (Susan’s son) is director of children’s ministry at a Presbyterian church in Georgia as well as a husband and father.

My Thoughts:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7

The book begins with this verse as the foundation which I really appreciate. It is our responsibility to not only teach but also to lead by example as our kids do want to mimic what we do. We need to make sure that our hearts are where they need to be in order to properly teach our children.

The purpose of this book is:

  • To teach children that they are created for God’s glory.
  • To show some practical implications of this life purpose.
  • To repeatedly emphasize to children their need for God’s grace to glorify Him.

Each chapter begins with a question/answer session (catechism questions) which are meant to be memorized. The number of question/answer sets to be memorized will depend on the child. The chapter then moves on to an interesting story which allows the child to see a practical application of the concepts. While the stories are simple and fun, they help the child get a more personal understanding of the catechism questions being presented. The story is followed by discussion questions, a verse, and a time of  prayer. The book contains 36 chapters/lessons.

I didn’t grow up reciting catechisms, but I do think their is a lot of value in catechisms as long as the children are genuinely digesting and understanding what they are reciting/memorizing. This book helps bring it all together in a way that is meaningful for the child. It also encourages family participation in a devotional time.
