I think it’s easy to get caught up in the gotta spend money to have a good vacation mentality, but the reality is that some of the most memorable times (at least for us) cost the least amount of money. We love being able to head out into the desert and explore. The only cost to us is the cost of the fuel to get there and back. The memories that we create are priceless. Normally, it’s quality family time without lots of distractions. It means that we have plenty of time to talk or just enjoy being around each other. Usually, we end up laughing about some crazy thing that happens.
That’s not to say that we don’t enjoy going to places like Sea World, Disney, the zoo, museums…. It just means that we can just as easily create wonderful memories without spending much money.
Money is tight for many, if not most, people these days. That doesn’t mean that we have to do without a vacation. It may mean that instead of going somewhere, we create a vacation at home. We may need to unplug from the regular routine and spend some quality family time together. That could mean creating your own waterpark experience at home. It could also be having a fun movie night by renting a movie, making homemade pizza, and having popcorn. Depending on where you are located, you could sleep out under the stars for the night or set up a tent in the backyard and make smores while telling stories.

We take our vacation time during Spet. every year. As homeschoolers, everyone else is in school and with our Military discount we get into some great places for free or cheap. Our most favorite one so far was Philadelphia, PA.
I love going to places at “off” times of the year when things are less crowded. It makes the vacation much more enjoyable. We’ve been to Philly and Gettysburg, but Munchkin was too young to remember it. We hope to be able to go again sometime now that she’s older.

Most of our “vacations” these days are camping trips. It has been years since we have been on a big vacation as a family.

We’ve been doing some fishing at nearby lakes lately. We might only spend two hours at the lake, but it feels like a little vacation. 🙂
Excellent post and reminder. It truly doesn’t cost a lot to have fun family time together. I love when we play board games for hours on end. Last weekend, we had a wonderful time at home together most of the weekend. Hubby wasn’t working for a change and we just enjoyed our time.
