Our next project was a paper mache Christmas tree. I picked up these cardboard cones at Michaels very inexpensively after Thanksgiving. We then cut out shapes with our Cricut in 3 different sizes – 1″, 1 1/2″, and 2″. Munchkin chose to do triangles and I did stars.
Using Mod Podge, we put on the various designs of paper shapes. I chose to do the 2″ shape on the bottom, the 1 1/2″ on the middle, and the 1″ on the top. Munchkin put hers on more randomly. (Notice the black garbage bag on the table. I learned from past experience that it’s a good idea to cover the work space with a garbage bag “just in case”.)
After we had completely covered the cone, we put a nice, even layer of Mod Podge over the whole tree and allowed it to dry over night.
After the whole thing dried, we found some bases for our trees. We didn’t want to purchase anything, so we just used things we had around the house such as a small bucket and a jar. You could also use a clay pot.
It’s one of those simple projects that’s a bit messy, but a lot of fun. You could easily create various colors and sizes of trees to go with the decor in your house or make some to give as gifts. To add more pizazz to the tree, you could add glitter, decorations, or even drill out some holes and place a LED light in each hole. Munchkin has placed a star on top of her tree. If you decide to make one, let me know.
