Christmas Traditions

Posted in Family, Holidays, and Homemaking

We have lots of different Christmas traditions including new Christmas pjs, making Christmas goodies, doing an Advent activity, making ornaments and crafts…  Some of these things are just fun, family activities while others help us stay focused on Christ.

One of the activities that helps us focus on Christ is to make or do something with the Nativity Story – the story of Christ’s birth.  (I always feel weird calling it a story because it’s so much more than “just a story”.)

This year, Munchkin was able to build her own Nativity scene using a punch out book that I picked up on clearance after Christmas 2 years ago.  She worked on it a little bit each day this week.  She got a little frustrated at points as it wouldn’t always go together “just so”.  To allow her to be able to work on it a little at a time, we placed it on the coffee table that D made.  (Will have to post pictures of that by itself later once I get it painted.)

As you can see from the next pictures, we tend to make a huge mess when we work on projects.  We spread out over the entire area where we are located. lol!

Here is the work in progress (sorry about the blurry pictures):

Here is the completed project:

Peaking in at Joseph and Baby Jesus in the manger
Hanging out with the shepherd boy and peaking in at Mary
The shepherds watching over their flocks in the fields and looking up to the star.
The wise men — traveling and following the star.
In addition to doing a Nativity activity, we always read the actual scripture passages related to Christ’s birth.  We’ve also added watching The Nativity Story each Christmas to our list of Christmas traditions.
On Christmas morning, we’ll get up and Munchkin and D will try to find the pickle ornament that is hidden on the tree.  Then, it’s time to open our stockings.  We’ll listen to Christmas music and enjoy monkey bread (I think).  We’ll read the Christmas story and offer up our thanks for the wonderful gift of Jesus.  We’ll open presents and have a birthday cake for Jesus.  We’ll have our traditional surf and turf Christmas meal spend the day relaxing and playing with our new goodies as a family.
