Handmade Christmas: Christmas Pjs

Posted in Holidays, and Homemaking

One of our Christmas traditions is that each year we get new pjs. This was something that my mom always did for my sister and I growing up, so I decided to keep the tradition when D and I got married.

In the past, we purchased pjs (at least for D and I).  This year, I saw some family pjs at different stores online. I thought that was a really cool idea, but I could justify the expense. I decided that I would make us matching pj pants. I picked up the patterns (Butterick B5153) after Thanksgiving for 99 cents (one child size, one adult size) and the material for $1.49 a yard.  (After Thanksgiving is a great time to stock up on cozy flannel due to these great sales.  I usually buy extra just to keep on hand for projects.)

Yesterday, I spent the day making the pj pants. The pattern is an easy pattern, but I had to make several adjustments for height. I’m too short and D is too tall according to the pattern. lol! I made Munchkin’s pjs slightly long and put a bigger hem in them, so I can let them out as she grows. I’m hoping they’ll last for a little while.

Another detail that I needed to figure out was how to add a tie waist to D’s pants.  He wanted a tie waist in addition to the elastic band.  That took a little more time, but it worked out.  In fact, it worked out so well that D decided that he wanted to wear his pants last night.  (I had him try them on to make sure they fit okay, and he decided that he didn’t want to take them off!)  Of course, that meant that Munchkin wanted to wear her pjs as well.  Oh well, at least they really like them.  They are quite soft and comfortable.

On Christmas morning, we’ll take our traditional “in pjs” family photo.

I want to make this one of our traditions, but I never have time to make the PJs! Maybe some year! 🙂

Yours turned out cute – and it's great that they didn't want to take them off. True sign of success!
