Passing Skills to the Next Generation: Cooking

Posted in Homemaking, and Homeschooling

Cake DecoratingMy butter cream frosting recipe was copied from my mom’s butter cream recipe.  My mom had copied that recipe from my grandfather’s recipe.  I made a slight change to the recipe (which I still need to note on the recipe card), and now, Munchkin will be copying the recipe from my recipe.  Munchkin will be the 4th generation to use the same basic recipe.

I stood by my mom’s side as she taught me how to make butter cream frosting and then frost a cake.  She showed me some basic skills and then sent me off to practice on a plate.  I am now able to pass along these skills to Munchkin.  There is something very gratifying about passing along these skills – skills that have been passed from generation to generation.

There are other recipes that have been passed down from one generation to the next that I will soon be teaching to Munchkin.  We’ll also be adding our own twist to old recipes to make them gluten free.  What a blessing to be able to share these cooking skills with my sweet Munchkin.  I look forward to spending more time with her in the kitchen.

What skills are you passing down to the next generation?
