Math Galaxy Review

Math Galaxy believes that there is a place for both teachers and computers in a student’s learning processes.  By tapping into the best of both, the student can gain the best education.  The teacher can best gauge where a student needs the most work, and the computer can drill the student with those types of problems until they master the concept.

Math Galaxy starts from the beginning, with addition and multiplication tables and single-digit operations, but its main focus is on where children start having trouble with math: multi-step problem-solving.

Since Munchkin is currently working her way through Algebra, I chose to look over the Algebra program.  Here is what the program looks like when you open it.

Algebra Fundamentals

The student clicks on the task/lesson they want to work on (or that the teacher assigns).  They are given the option to do a review which gives them lessons on the subject, or they can jump right into doing problems.  As they do problems, they will earn little robots for the labyrinth.  The only problem I have with this particular set-up was that the student receives robots for both correct or incorrect answers.  This could create serious problems for some students.  The students can quit the problem set at any time.  Below, you will see some examples of the problems.

Algebra Fundamentals Screen Shots

As you can see, the screens are quite colorful, so they are more likely to capture the attention of kids.  While there are games, they are not high resolution, high animation games.  They are fun, but they do have a bit of a learning curve.  Overall, this is a good, solid supplemental math program.

For the Math Galaxy software, you will need Windows 98 or later or MAC OS X.  The cd software costs $29.95 with free shipping and carries a 30 day money back guarantee.

As a member of the TOS Crew, I received downloads from Math Galaxy for the purpose of this review.  No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.
