Learning can be Fun!

Posted in Family, Homemaking, and Homeschooling

Munchkin loves to play board games. Me? Not so much. I usually pass off the board game playing to Daddy when possible. The problem? Daddy has been pretty busy since we moved here, so Munchkin hasn’t been able to play very many board games lately.

At the same time this was going on, Munchkin started to get a little tired of the regular routine for school. Doing just the basics wasn’t cutting it for her. She needed some variety, some fun.

I decided to make some changes in how our day was going to look. I’ll write more later on how we have started to incorporate more things into our daily routine, but for now, I’ll just talk about the games.

I pulled out all of the educational games that I have purchased over the years to see what all we had available. I put together file folder games that I had saved on the computer. I made other games that went along with what we were studying. I made up some different math games. I found some great file folder and other educational games at the dollar store.

I put all of the games in the same location. The educational board games are in the game closet (next to the school area) on their own shelf. The rest of the games are in a storage bin in the school area. I categorized the games by subject matter in order to best utilize them.

Each day, I pick up between 2-3 games for us to play. Some are simple, quick games that only last a few minutes. I use these between harder subjects. Others are longer, more involved games. These are used at the end of the school day as a motivation to get work done a bit faster.

Munchkin is loving this! She’s always excited to see what games we’ll be playing today. Not only is she looking forward to doing her school work more thanks to incorporating these games into her day, but I’ve also seen a huge improvement in her skills in some of the areas where we’re using the games. Plus, she is loving that Mommy is playing games with her.

Munchkin is getting quality game time with Mommy while learning. This definitely works for us!

We usually play board, card or dice games once a week in this home, and the children don't even realise that they are learning – shhh, don't tell them. 😛
