Apiary Field Trip

Posted in Homeschooling

Today, we headed out on a field trip with our homeschooling group to a local apiary. We had a lot of fun as the kids (and adults) learned more about bees, honey, and beeswax. I came home with 4 pints of fresh honey, some beeswax candles, and a honey cookbook. I couldn’t pass up the great deal on yummy local honey and candles.

Talking about the gear used in bee keeping. This gentleman doesn’t care to use gloves as he feels it’s easier to work without them.

Showing the kids that bees aren’t out to hurt them. He explained that bees rarely ever win the war. They may sting us, but it is a high price for them to pay.

At the end of the presentation, they kids were taken on a ride to go see the hives.

I know this was very educational. My late FIL kept bees. When I first entered the family, it took me a while to be comfortable walking by the hives to the pasture. I love honey.
