Last night, D and I were laughing about how different our reading lists were. Could it have something to do with our professions? lol! Hmm… I’m reading about homemaking, organization, homeschooling. He’s reading about combat and past wars. I’d have to say yes. We’re naturally drawn to reading things and learning about things that concern us directly. Have I read things about the war and military? Absolutely, but that isn’t my main focus.
Now, one book that is on my list (Flags of Our Fathers) doesn’t exactly fit in with the other books. Whenever a movie is based on a book, I love to try to read the book first. The book tends to give a more complete picture than the movie. I had munchkin do the same with the American Girl Molly movie. (She wasn’t reading at that level before the other 2 American Girl movies came out. She has since read the series for Felicity and Samantha.)
I believe that it is good, at times, to step out of our normal reading zone and read something completely different. If you don’t normally read classic literature, why not pick up a book and broaden your horizons. Do you normally read non-fiction? Why not pick up a funny, fictional book. Only read fiction? Pick up some non-fiction about a subject that you enjoy.
I hear people say that they don’t have time to read. Now, there are times that this is true, but normally, it’s more that they don’t want to make time to read. I love reading in the evening as it’s a good way to settle down for the night. Make some time to read today….
