A New Baby Donkey

Posted in Family

While Monday held a bit of bad craziness with the freak storm that caused damage at the horse rescue, there was also some good craziness that took place the following day. The horse rescue has two different areas – the regular horse rescue and the retirement villa. The retirement villa allows horses/donkeys/ponies to live out the remainder of their lives in peace and comfort in a relaxing environment. There are a variety of reasons for the horses to be at the retirement villa rather than at the regular rescue, but they all revolve around having special needs whether it be…

Wind Damage at the Horse Rescue

Posted in Family

On Monday afternoon, shortly after Munchkin and I had left the horse rescue for the day, a big windstorm came through the ranch. A wind funnel/dust devil ripped through the pasture taking out stalls and shade structures. The one set of stalls crashed through the fence causing some major damage to the fence. Thankfully, no one was hurt even though there were a couple of volunteers who were in a stall near the stalls that were taken out. Even the horses were okay; they were just really spooked and running around like a wild herd of horses. Sadly, this all…

Saying Goodbye to Zion

Zion came to the rescue with Dixie (Munchkin’s foster horse) and Gypsy. He had some health issues, but we didn’t realize how bad until today. Zion pretty much become my horse since he came into the rescue that day a little over two weeks ago. We really bonded as I took care of him. I was even able to ride him on Tuesday. Unfortunately, on Wednesday, he took a turn for the worse. Today, Thursday, we took him to the vet. He had choke caused by a tumor in his throat. Sadly, this tumor meant that he could no longer…

Dixie’s Surgery

Posted in Family, and Homeschooling

Today was quite the interesting day which involved a “field trip” to a local vet to have Dixie’s tumor removed from her leg. Please note: some of this images may be disturbing to some people. I decided to post the pictures in black and white, so the images will be a little less graphic than their color form. Dixie, if you recall, is Munchkin’s foster horse at the horse rescue. Dixie came to the rescue with a large tumor on her leg. It needed to be removed, so Isabel (the owner of the rescue) set up an appointment with the…

Munchkin’s Foster Horse

Posted in Family

It’s been a bit of a crazy week already at the horse rescue, and it’s only Tuesday when I’m writing this. Monday morning found us back at the ranch ready to get back to work. Munchkin thought that she’d be fostering Sadie, but over the weekend, Sadie was adopted by a really great family which is wonderful news for Sadie. Thankfully, we had talked about this possibility prior to arriving at the ranch, so while she was disappointed, it wasn’t a huge let down. With what happened next, it quickly became the last thing we were thinking about…. Shortly after…
