We originally thought that we were going to be heading to Yosemite National Park for our Memorial Day vacation, but it turns out that unless you get in reservations early – really early – that you’re not getting a camping spot. At least, you’re not getting a spot that will work for a 5th wheel trailer. Since we take the dogs with us and they’re not allowed on most trails, they need to be able to stay in the trailer. Tent camping wasn’t an option this trip. Anywho… we decided to head on up to the Williams, Az instead. We wanted to do a little off-road exploration and hike the canyon a bit.
Now, we didn’t have time to really prepare to hike into the canyon, so this meant that it wasn’t going to be an easy hike for any of us. We chose something “easier” when we checked out the different trails into the canyon. We also needed to take time into consideration as we didn’t want to be gone all day. Thankfully, the weather was nice, so we weren’t dealing with extreme heat in addition to the moderate hike.
We decided to start our hike at the South Kaibab Trailhead. (If you look at the picture above you can see part of the trail heading down into the canyon.) We weren’t sure how far into the canyon we were going to go as we didn’t know how we were going to feel. We took plenty of food and water in our hydration packs.
Going down into the canyon wasn’t too difficult as long as you paid attention to where you were walking and maintained good footing. Some areas were a little more difficult for me than they were for Daddy and Munchkin due to the fact that I have short legs and they both have long legs. lol!
We stopped here and there and checked out the wonderful views.
It’s a different feeling viewing things from in the canyon rather than the rim. (Someday, we’d like to hike down to the bottom, but that would take some serious training and prep to get to that point. Maybe it will happen. We’ll see….)
We certainly felt tiny next to the monstrous canyon walls. It felt good to be back out hiking as a family.
Soon, we would realize that it’s been a bit too long since our last hike, and we weren’t in the same shape we use to be in prior to D’s surgeries.
We decided that we’d stop at Ooh Aah Point, and then make our way back up. This is where the not-so-fun climb began…
More adventures from our trip:
