Having a solid foundation on math basics including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is critical for kids to have success in math at all levels. While regular drills are great, kids tend to do better when they can have fun while they are learning.
MathRider allows students to learn their math facts in a fun interactive environment designed to capture their attention and make them want to continue learning. Practice sessions allow students to get a better grasp on concepts before they begin their quests. The game adjusts the skill level as the child shows improvement, so the child can gain true mastery of the concepts being presented. Parents (teachers) will receive emails when the child achieves mastery of the various math facts.
In addition to working on math facts, students will be working on their typing skills as they answer the math problems. We found that having a traditional keyboard with number pad made it easier to complete the given tasks, but a laptop can be used if the child does well with typing. Once Munchkin got use to typing in the numbers on her laptop, she was okay, but she definitely preferred using a number pad as it allowed her to type in the answers faster.
Overall, Munchkin really enjoyed the program. I saw an improvement in not only the speed that she was able to recall her math facts, but also her typing skills. The one thing that she said that she’d like to see was the capability to personalize the horses. (She loves horses, so this is definitely something unique to a horse person.) She also said it would be nice if she could work on certain skill/number sets instead of them being random.
MathRider works on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. You can view specific system requirements here. It is currently available as a download for $37.
I received a trial version of MathRider as a member of the TOS Crew to help facilitate the writing of a frank and honest review. No compensation was received. All opinions are my own.
Good review. My daughter loved it too. And it’s so glad to see a product that like LINUX systems. 🙂
