Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

That verse is the philosophy behind the creation of Salem Ridge Press.  Founded in 2005 by Daniel Mills, a homeschool grad, Salem Ridge Press strives to bring good, wholesome books back into print for the reading enjoyment of both young and old.

Daniel carefully selects books that are wholesome, contain strong moral values, and encourage positive character.  At times, this may mean that some books have slightly edited content to maintain a high level of purity in relationships (no kissing or embracing) and remove derogatory comments that may be seen as offensive.  Some of the pictures may also be edited to remove immodesty.

In addition to editing out objectionable content, some other content may be added to aid the reader in better understanding of the book.  Footnotes contain definitions of uncommon (at least in today’s society) terminology.  Books may also contain historical notes, map, and timelines to help readers better understand the time period and customs.

We were given the opportunity to look over 2 books from the Emma Leslie Church History Series and 1 historical fiction book.  I was impressed with that quality of the hard copy book that we received.   Unlike many other reprints that I’ve seen in the past, these books have been completely re-typeset which makes the print very easy to read.

Bookshelf

Emma Leslie (the author of 2 of the books that we received) lived from 1837-1909, so that gives you an idea of when these books were originally written.  Currently, Salem Ridge Press offers 12 of the 24 books in the Emma Leslie Church History Series.  Lord willing, they will, in time, be offering all 24 books in the series.  The complete series spans from the time of Paul to the Methodist Revivals.  Emma has a talent for making church history come alive for readers as they are drawn into the time period and lives of the people in the books.

About the books that we received:

From Bondage to Freedom: A Tale of the Times of Mohammed (Church History Series) is available in both softcover ($14.95) and hardcover ($24.95).  The historical notes, important dates, and word definitions (footnotes) make the reading of this book much easier.  It’s recommended for ages 12 – Adult.

Gytha’s Message: a Tale of Saxon England (Church History Series) is available in both softcover ($12.95) and hardcover ($22.95).  It’s recommended for ages 12 – Adult.

Marie’s Home: A Glimpse of the Past (Historical Fiction – World History – The French Revolution) is available in softcover ($12.95).  It’s recommended for ages 10 – Adult.

If you’re looking for living books with old-fashioned values about times gone by, you will want to check out Salem Ridge Press.

I received a copy of 1 book and 2 e-books from Salem Ridge Press as a member of the TOS Crew in return for an honest review. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own

  1. One of the things I noticed about the Emma Leslie books is how she wrote differently for each time period. I found them to be very good books! They each had a different ‘feel’ to them and I appreciated that, although they were by the same author.
