The Twittering of Birds

Momma Bird on Nest

Virtually every morning, I wake up to the twittering of birds right outside of my window.  The funny this is that the large birds seem to make less noise than the small birds.  Our little hummingbird appears to make the loudest noise out of all of our feathered friends.  (Side note: I have yet to capture our little hummingbird in a picture.  He/she is just way too fast.  One day, I may be able to get a nice picture….)

Today, Munchkin told me that she was afraid that the momma bird sitting on the nest in our tree was dead because she wasn’t moving – at all.  Well, I didn’t even realize that we had a birds nest in the tree (disadvantage of being inside with a bum ankle), so I had her take me to see the momma bird.  While the momma bird was very still, she was not dead.

I was amazed that she just sat there and looked at me as I got close and tried to take some pictures.  She didn’t move anything except her eyes.  It was very interesting to watch how this momma bird just sat there on her nest.  She wasn’t going anywhere.  Munchkin says that she hasn’t left the nest at all from what she can tell.  (Obviously, we’re not watching 24/7, but Munchkin is out there for hours at a time during the week.)

Most birds that we’ve been around in the past will fly away, but stay near to watch over the nest.  Not this momma – she’s staying put.  No one (or no thing) is getting to her babies on her watch.

    • I have no doubt about that. We mommas are rather protective. 😉

  2. Hi! Now that my work is slowing down, I’ve realized that my reader didn’t make the change with you and I’ve missed months of your posts. Sad about that!

Beautiful pictures! Hope you will be able to get pictures of the little ones when it’s time!!

    • Glad you were able to find me again. Several people had/are having the same problem. That’s one major disadvantage to moving to a different blogging platform.
