Family Movie Night: Secrets of the Mountain

Posted in Family, and Reviews

Secrets of the MountainWe enjoy having family movie nights at our house.  It’s fun to sit down as a family and watch a great movie.  All too often lately movies seem to contain at least some material that we would prefer to avoid.  I had heard great things about Secrets of the Mountain, so I was optimistic when we received it to watch.

I liked that Walmart had partnered with Proctor & Gamble to produce a family friendly movie.  The great news is that this isn’t a one time partnership.  They are going to be producing a series of family friendly movies.

The Secrets of the Mountain is a story about a real family with real problems.

Somewhere between the demands of her career, her ex husband’s wedding, and her kids busy schedules, Dana James (mom) realizes that her family is starting to fall apart. She is stressed.  The older kids are constantly fighting.  They aren’t spending any quality time together as a family.  Her family is crumbling before her eyes.  When a mysterious buyer offers to purchase the family’s mountain property, Dana jumps at the chance to head away from the stress of the day-to-day life and get away.  She’s hoping this little get away will be just what her family needs to pull together.  Little did she know what surprises this trip would hold.  Nothing is what it seems.  The mountain holds an ancient secret.  Will her family survive the ancient mystery of the mountain?

Secrets of the Mountain is a movie that held many twists and turns and held our attention for the whole movie.  Munchkin thought that it was a like a kid-friendly Indiana Jones type movie.  I appreciated that it was a solid movie with good acting and no inappropriate material.  D thought is was great to be able to watch an action/adventure movie that was suitable for our entire family.

While not an issue for us, I do need to mention that there are skeletons shown at one point in the movie, so this may be scary for some children.  In addition, the beginning of the movie shows a vehicle crash.  Once again, while this was not a big deal for us, I wanted to bring it to your attention.

It was refreshing to watch a movie that focused on the family and building good family relationships.  It shows the importance of standing up for family and forgiveness for past mistakes.

The Walmart exclusive 2-Disc Bonus pack includes a dvd and the cd soundtrack for the movie.  The soundrack produced by Randy Jackson (American Idol) features artists such as Jordin Sparks and Brooke White.  The dvd is packed with bonus features including Family Night Ideas.  The Secrets of the Mountain is available for $12 at Walmart for a limited time.

We had a great evening watching the movie together, and the movie lead to some interesting conversations both during and after the movie.  Do you like to have family movie nights?  What family friendly movies have you seen lately that you would recommend?

I received a copy of the Secrets of the Mountain for the purpose of an honest review. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

  1. My older kids (age 3 & 8) watched this with me, we recorded it too. The only actual complaint I had about it was the way the ending was left so open – I’d have liked to see some more stuff about what happened to the artifacts after they found them. It was a wonderful movie though!

I’m so glad I came across your recommendation for this movie. I hadn’t heard of it before and even though our nest is empty my dh and I still look for movies that are family-friendly to watch. Thanks!
