Christmas Traditions

Posted in Family, Holidays, and Homemaking

We have lots of different Christmas traditions including new Christmas pjs, making Christmas goodies, doing an Advent activity, making ornaments and crafts…  Some of these things are just fun, family activities while others help us stay focused on Christ. One of the activities that helps us focus on Christ is to make or do something with the Nativity Story – the story of Christ’s birth.  (I always feel weird calling it a story because it’s so much more than “just a story”.) This year, Munchkin was able to build her own Nativity scene using a punch out book that I…

Bertie’s War Review

Bertie’s War by Barbara Tifft Blakey Description: Everything has been going wrong for Bertie lately. No matter how hard she tries to do and say the right thing, Bertie keeps tumbling into embarrassing–and sometimes dangerous–situations. Her stern father has too many rules, her know-it-all sister won’t stop teasing her, and her mischievous younger brother keeps getting into trouble. But what makes her really afraid are those Communist missiles pointed right at the U.S. As Bertie starts seventh grade in the fall of 1962, news of these missiles throws the nation into a panic and Bertie suddenly feels completely out of…

Handmade Christmas: Doll Christmas Pjs

Posted in Holidays, and Homemaking

Knowing how much Munchkin enjoys having special things for her AG doll, I thought that it was fitting for her doll to have pj pants that matched our Christmas pj pants.  I decided to make these while she was outside playing with her friends in the back yard.  On Christmas Eve, when we open our gift of pjs, Munchkin will also be receiving a surprise gift of pjs for her doll.  (We’re all wearing red t-shirts to go with these pants.  Thankfully, she already has a red shirt for her doll that I was able to slip away without her…

Handmade Christmas: Delicious Gluten Free Treats

Posted in Gluten Free, Holidays, and Homemaking

Christmas can be dangerous for me because I really enjoy baking, and I also enjoy eating those baked goods.  Yesterday, Munchkin needed some cookies to take with her to her Awana Christmas party.  Since I was busy working on several other projects, I cheated and used a Betty Crocker Gluten Free chocolate chip cookie mix that I had on hand.  I tossed in some M&Ms to make it more festive and sprinkled some colored sugar on top.  I turned these into quite large cookies by using ice cream scoop sized balls of dough.  While I usually cook from scratch, it’s…

Handmade Christmas: PomPom Critters

Posted in Holidays, and Homemaking

Munchkin created these cute Christmas Pom Pom Critters to give to her friends.  Last year, we purchased a craft kit on clearance after Christmas.  When she discovered how much she liked making them, she asked if she could get the materials to make more.  Thankfully, JoAnn Fabrics carries all of the items needed to create these cute critters (pom poms – small & medium, felt, foam, wiggly eyes, tinsel stems).  To make this craft easier for Munchkin to do on her own, I gave her glue dots to use instead of using hot glue. Check out more crafts at the…
