As I was looking for some Thanksgiving activities, I came across a song that we use to sing at our Thanksgiving feast in elementary school. It put a huge smile on my face and fond memories came flooding back in a flash.
Every year, my mom would make sure we had our home sewn Pilgrim or Indian costume for the feast. We would parade around in our costumes before entering the “banquet hall”. Before we were allowed to eat, we would sing the following song:
The second to last line would be yelled as loud as possible. As we sand, a teacher held up these boards that had the words as well as pictures in place of some of the words. We would then say a prayer of blessing on our food and give thanks for all that was given to us before we chowed down on all of the wonderful food. It was such a fun time.
I am grateful for silly songs that bring back fond memories. It’s funny how such a silly song can make me feel a little closer to my mom even though she is no longer here. I am thankful that my mom was willing to take the time to make us our costumes and be there at school events even if it meant less time for her or nights of very little sleep.
