This week’s Frugal Friday tip has to do with moving because that’s what we’re dealing with at our house this week. How to move on a budget…
Moving can get very costly (and stressful) when you don’t plan ahead. Normally, we would be having the military move us, but this time around we’ll be moving ourselves.
One thing that is really cutting down on the cost is that we’re receiving packing boxes from a local business for free. We just need to go pick them up whenever we need them. This last time, we received a huge stack that should last for the rest of the packing.
Another thing I recommend is not buying cheap packing tape as you’ll end up having to use more. Just remember that you can buy inexpensive tape without it being cheap.
Also, meal planning is essential if you do not want to spend a lot of money on fast food. Allow the crockpot and freezer meals become your new best friend. Now is one of those times that prepackaged food (on sale with coupons) can be a really great deal.
If you’re doing a local or short distance move, you need to calculate if all those back and forth trips are actually saving you money due to the cost of gas. It may be less expensive to rent a large truck/trailer instead of doing many little trips. Even better, see if someone you know has a trailer that you can use for a day or two.

Great moving savings blog. As a fellow military wife, whose moved 6 times in 7 years, I really appreciate any help we can get. I especially liked your thoughts on savings on food; not eating so much fast food does save money and “calories too” =). Great tips! And, I pray your upcoming move goes smooth and is filled with special blessings from above. He is able! So much more than able!
Great tips! I totally agree with you that prepackaged foods can save you money if the alternative is eating out. I always try to keep a couple of $3 frozen pizzas in the freezer for those nights when I am tempted to order pizza. $20 to order, or $6 for frozen. Much cheaper in the long run.
We just moved last summer and again in the fall and it was a horrible experience. I hope yours goes much better! good luck!
Very good moving tips. Fortunately I’m not having to move, or planning to move. I’ve done enough of it during my life. Here’s trusting all goes well for you and yours.
