I use this easy melon preparation technique for most melons such as watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew. While wedges are fun sometimes, I’ve found that it’s much easier to eat melon when it’s not on the rind. If I have the melon all cut up, it’s sure to be gobbled up.

Watermelon

In our Bountiful Baskets order this week, we received these nice little watermelons. I was thrilled that they were the seedless variety as we prefer them over their seeded counterpart. You’ll want to make sure you have a large, sharp knife. Sharp knives mean there is less chance of a cutting accident. Also, make sure you are working on a solid surface. You don’t want your cutting board/mat moving around while you are cutting up the watermelon (or other melon).

The next step is cutting off the top and bottom of the melon. This will allow for a stable, flat cutting area as well as allow you to easily perform the next step.

Now, you’ll begin slicing the rind off the side of the melon. Slowly work your way all the way around the melon until there is no rind left. To finish up, remove any extra rind that may have been left behind while cutting off the large pieces.

You’ll want to cut the melon into large flat pieces. I usually cut vertically and then lay down the pieces to get ready for the next step. (If you are cutting up a melon that has seeds on the inside, you’ll cut the melon in half and scoop out the seeds prior to cutting.)

Watermelon Sticks

Now you can cut the large pieces into sticks. Sometimes, it’s fun to just leave and serve the watermelon as sticks. It’s something a little different.

The final step is cubing the watermelon. You can store it in a container in the fridge or serve immediately. It’s very rare that at least some of the melon isn’t eaten immediately around here. Usually, the melon is gone the same day, but it will sometimes make it a day or two. lol!

You can do this easy melon preparation with several types of melons as well as pineapple. Toss in some other chopped up fruits for a delicious fruit salad. Yum!

  1. looks scrumptious! I cut my melons up and put them in the fridge as well. That is the way my family will eat them. If I don’t cut them, they don’t get eaten.

  2. Beautiful and yummy! This is how Ladybug cuts hers….the only difference is we eat the seed filled ones, as that’s how God intended them. We also eat the seeds as they are full of vitamins, minerals, etc. And no watermelon has ever grown in our tummy. 🙂

    Wow yummy watermelon! I never thought of cutting watermelon in that way or peeling it. I just cut it first into halves then cut it again into smaller portion then ate it. Thanks for the tips.

  5. Thanks for sharing this tip. I just cut up a cantaloupe and it barely took me five minutes with your method. My kids are going to be so thankful that I can cut more melons for them this summer.
