Family Movie Night: The Mighty Macs Giveaway

Posted in Reviews

the mighty macsWe had just received The Mighty Macs in the mail on Monday, and we decided it would be fun to watch on Valentine’s Day. Since we enjoy based on true story movies as well as sport movies, we were looking forward to sitting down to watch it. I got everything set up for our evening in, so we were ready to go when Daddy finally made it home. It was time for family movie night!

The final verdict? We all enjoyed the movie. During the movie, we provided some background information for Munchkin and explained a few things here or there. Since we live in a time where girls playing basketball (even at a professional level) is not as big of a deal, we needed to go back in time a little to help her understand why many of the things happening were not the norm.

While not everyone will appreciate Cathy’s approach to life, marriage, and career, we appreciated her passion and zeal when it came to her team. There was one line in the movie that stuck out to us… “It’s the small things that matter.” This is very true in both life and relationships.

About the Movie:

It’s 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time … and she’s about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women’s basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women’s Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.

Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she’s willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she’s just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.

From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school’s Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!

While it appears the Macs don’t have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.

Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing’s for certain: there’s never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

Family Movie Night: A Mile in His Shoes Review & Giveaway

A Mile in His ShoesArthur “Murph” Murphy (played by Dean Cain) and his minor league baseball team, the River Rats, need a miracle to get them out of their current losing streak and horrible season. On his way to try to sign a promising player, he unexpectedly finds himself stuck on the side of the road. This little bit of misfortune allows him to stumble upon Mickey, a young farm boy with an incredible pitching arm. Because he has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism, Mickey’s parents are hesitant to allow Mickey to try out for the baseball team. Eventually, Mickey’s parents agree to let him try out when Murph convinces them that the team will benefit their son. In time, Murph will come to realize that Mickey will be a blessing not only to the team but also to himself.

We sat down to watch this PG movie as part of our Family Movie Night. We even had some yummy kettle corn as we watched. A Mile in His Shoes is based on a true story which we usually enjoy. The story itself was inspirational to watch. Mickey was able to overcome some of his difficulties through baseball, and he inspired so many people in the process. While the acting was good, it was really the story of an amazing young man that really drew us into the movie.

It was a clean, family friendly movie.

About A Mile in His Shoes:

From the director of “Angels In the Outfield” comes an inspiring story about a special boy with an amazing gift, and the coach who believed. Dean Cain and Luke Schroder star in the gmc movie based on the book “The Legend of Mickey Tussler”.

Length of movie: 89 minutes

Special Features: The Making of A Mile in His Shoes ~ Trailer ~ Thomas Kincade Painting Gallery

One of my readers will receive their own copy of A Mile in His Shoes. Giveaway is open to everyone and ends 1/25.

Family Movie Night: The Christmas Lodge

The Christmas Lodge

It’s time for another great family movie night movie.  Yes, I know that it’s a little early for Christmas movies, but the reality is that Thanksgiving is not that far away (next week).  It’s time to start pulling out those old favorite Christmas movies and adding a few new ones to the collection.  We’re happy to add The Christmas Lodge to our Christmas movie collection.

The Christmas Lodge is a heart-warming story about family and making wonderful memories that last.

During a weekend getaway in the mountains, Mary comes across an old lodge which looks quite familiar.  When she realizes that it’s a special lodge, The Christmas Lodge, from her family’s past, she decides that she wants to find a way to help Jack restore it to its former glory.  Jack, while a proud man, realizes that this is his opportunity to bring is family’s heritage back to life, so he hesitantly accepts Mary’s offer of help.  When Mary tells her ailing Grandfather of the task ahead, he lights up and begins to tell stories from the past which gives Mary the extra motivation that she needs to continue to push through all of the trials.  The question is – will they be able to complete all of the work on The Christmas Lodge in time for one more family Christmas?

We enjoyed watching this Thomas Kinkade Christmas movie together.  It was a clean, heart-felt story that stresses the importance of faith and family.

As Christmas is a time of giving, it’s only fitting that I am able to give away 1 copy of Thomas Kinkade’s The Christmas Lodge to one of my readers.  Giveaway is open to ALL my readers even international readers.

GIVEAWAY – Open to all readers – Ends 11/22

All Aboard the Polar Express

Posted in Family, and Holidays

Since CHRISTmas is right around the corner, we decided to watch the Polar Express as part of our family movie night.  I kept reading about how others had made a fun routine out of it by everyone wearing pjs, drinking hot chocolate, and eating cookies. I decided to make ours a little more special by creating tickets based upon the polar express party pack that I found online.  I printed out the tickets on some light blue paper.  I cut out the tickets and glued them to brown cardstock.  I then took a small hole punch and punched out a…
