SINCE 1984, THE ARMED FORCES HAVE SET ASIDE A SPECIAL DAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS OF OUR HEROES. AT THIS YEAR, FRIDAY, 09 MAY 2008, HAS BEEN DESIGNATED MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY. THE LIFE OF A MILITARY FAMILY IS ONE OF UNIQUE CHALLENGES. On Monday, April 21, 2008, 1st Lt. Matthew Vandegrift, USMC, 28, was killed during combat operations in Basra. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Matthew Vandegrift grew up in Austin, Texas, and graduated with honors in 2005 from Texas A&M University with a degree in international business. His family, of Littleton, said he loved hanging out with friends, playing video games and watching movies.
