Turkey Burgers

Today, I picked up our new Bountiful Baskets.  They were filled with all kinds of delicious fruits and veggies. It’s so much fun opening our organic box to see what goodies it holds for us.  We were thrilled to see some honey dew, kiwi, and pineapple this week.  What a yummy treat.

I decided that we’d enjoy some of our new goodies all day.  For breakfast, I made up a nice fruit salad.  For lunch, we had turkey bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches.  Then, for supper, I set out to make some tasty turkey burgers.

When I picked up some groceries yesterday, I found the new Udi’s gluten free hamburger buns, so I decided to try them out.  I like to toast only the inside of the buns and leave the outsides nice and soft.  I do this by placing them on the cast iron griddle after I cook the burgers.

Back to the burgers themselves… While I love to have the flavor of onions and peppers with my burgers, sometimes adding them as toppings make the burgers too big.  I decided to mince the onions and peppers and add them to the ground turkey.  I also added cheddar cheese that I had finely grated and ground flax seed.

I like to cook the burgers on a cast iron griddle inside as it’s a little easier.  Plus, I don’t have to be concerned with the burgers falling apart on the regular grill.  After the burgers were cooked, I put a little mayo on the buns and topped the burger with fresh lettuce and tomato.  They tasted really good.  Yum!

The turkey burgers are a healthier alternative to normal ground beef burgers.  They are not greasy, so the meal doesn’t feel (or taste) as heavy.  In the past, I’ve also shredded other veggies and added them to the burgers.  You can really change the flavor of the burger depending on what you add to the ground meat.

We’re really focusing on eating foods that will assist in helping with D’s surgery recovery.  Yes, we’ll have a few sweet treats here and there, but our primary goal is to eat high power, healthy foods.  It’s great because we’re all eating better and getting more than the recommended number of servings of fruits and veggies each day.  Delicious!!

  1. DH took the cast iron griddle when he moved to SC (we are currently a bi-state family while he starts his new job and the kids finish school here in GA). Anyway…LOL – do you think these will work on the george foreman grill?

    I bought some ground turkey yesterday with full intentions of making it into tacos – but these look so much better! Maybe I’ll make the kids some tacos, and make myself a burger.

    • They should work well on the george foreman grill. They may stick a bit, so you may need to spray the grill plates. (I’ve only used a george foreman grill once, so I could be wrong.)

        OK, I tried it – and I killed our foreman grill…LOL
        granted, it was 11 years old – so I think it’s OK that I killed it.

        However, it was YUMMY! I used fresh ground turkey vs. frozen and the flavor was great! I did mix it with shredded cheese, and took an onion out to use, but forgot to put it in.

        I will be making these again!

    • We’ve been using ground turkey/chicken for nearly 4 years now. On occasion, I’ll pick up some organic ground beef or buffalo/bison, but Munchkin actually prefers the ground turkey/chicken. We just don’t eat that much red meat around here.
