Rosie and Scamper Book Description:
While learning to ride at Sonrise Stable, eight-year-old Rosie dreams of the horse shows she will win with her pony, Jet. Two years later, nothing is exactly the way Rose planned it – she’s riding a new pony, Scamper, and learning that life isn’t always easy. But it’s as Rosie reaches out to the new girl next door that she truly begins to see that God works all things together for good in our lives.
The Sonrise Stable series is the heartwarming, continuing story of an extended homeschooling family as they live, learn, and love together. Mixing adventure, life lessons, and realistic horse experiences, the series is a must for readers who enjoy family values, Christian faith, and, of course, horses!
Vicki Watson has a love of horses that began when a teenage neighbor offered her the opportunity to ride for the first time on the back of a horse. From her 8-year-old perspective, it seemed like the biggest horse in the world. From that moment on, she was hooked. Horses became a very important part of her life, although, she could never have imagined, at the time, how much God would teach her about Himself and her relationship to Him through horses.
My Thoughts:
Rosie and Scamper is the first book in the Sonrise Stable series. No, I didn’t misspell Sonrise. It’s purposefully written that way because Grandma (the owner of the stable) has a love of the Lord and wanted her stable to reflect that. It’s even brought up the opportunity to witness more than once when someone asks about the “wrong” spelling. Of course, Grandma has a horse story for everything which she always beautifully ties to a spiritual lesson.
This is my first experience with the Sonrise Stable series. Unlike many horse books, this series doesn’t focus just on the kids. Instead, it shows the importance of family togetherness and bonding. Kids are not left to their own devices. Instead, they are guided and encouraged by elders (Grandma and their parents), and there are consequences for making bad choices. The families are actively involved in the lives of their kids, and they nurture the kids’ dreams.
As a homeschool mom, I can appreciate the unique nature of this Christian homeschooling family. I love how it shows how the child’s interests can be beautifully developed within this environment. Vicki’s seamless weaving of spiritual truths into the story, and the realistic horse experiences and information made the book more enjoyable.
If you’re looking for a good horse series for your child that encourages Biblical teachings and a strong family unit, this series is for you.
