Roasted Cauliflower and Broccoli

Posted in Gluten Free, and Homemaking

Today, I picked up our Bountiful Baskets order, and I have to say that the organic baskets were wonderful this week. We received broccoli, cauliflower, cherries, mangoes, donut peaches, mushrooms, corn, purple kale, baby bok choy, celery, and cantaloupe. I also got a box of pineapple. The pineapple, mangoes, and peaches aren’t ripe yet, so that will give us a chance to really dig into all the other yummy fruits. Because I really want to take advantage of all of the yummy goodies this week, I decided to make some roasted cauliflower and broccoli for lunch. It’s been some time since I’ve made…

Learning Traditional Baking and Cooking Skills

Posted in Homemaking, and Homesteading

One of the things that we’re currently working on in our home is learning more traditional baking and cooking skills. While I do know some about preserving, I thought it would be nice to jump into learning more skills such as yogurt making, sour dough baking, and creating homemade treats for the pups. I love kitchen gadgets – just ask anyone who knows me and they’ll confirm that. lol! Yet, this time, we’re going a bit old school as I don’t have fancy gadgets to make all of this work. Our own declaration of independence gives us some clues into the thought process of those who helped create the backbone of our nation.

USS Midway

While we were over in San Diego spending time with Grandma and Grandpa, we decided that we would visit the USS Midway. To make the trip even more fun, we hopped on the ferry in Coronado and road it over to San Diego. We explored the ship, learned a bit more about aircraft carriers, and enjoyed listening to the World War II veteran. We all agreed that we wouldn’t really care to live aboard the ship – too close quarters for us. 😉 Poor Daddy had to duck pretty much the whole time we were on board except when we…

World War II Veteran Allen Bodenlos

Posted in Military Life

Last week, we had the opportunity to listen to Allen Bodenlos, a World War II Veteran who was at Pearl Harbor during the fatal bombing by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941. He watched as the USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma sank into the depths of Pearl Harbor. We stood there and listened intently as he told us about the sailors and Marines who were trapped inside the ships with no chance to escape. He also told us stories of bravery and sacrifice as service members put the lives of others before their own. Some would make it out alive…
