His Eye is on the Sparrow

Sparrow in Tree

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing?
and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
~Matthew 10:29-31~

I was reminded of these verses as I looked out on the birds in our yard today. I stepped back in time to when I was younger and we sang this song in church…

His Eye Is on the Sparrow by Civilla D. Martin (1905)

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I am always grateful that the Lord uses His Creation to remind me how much He loves me, my family, my friends. Yes, we live in a fallen world filled with many ups and downs. We need not look far to see evil in this world, but if we look closely, we can still see glimpses of the beauty from His original, perfect earth. I am grateful for these glimpses…

Male Blackbird

I am grateful that often I wake to the sounds of the birds chirping, singing outside my window.

Female Blackbird

I am grateful that even on the most frustrating of days I can look outside and see glimpses of the beauty that once was which gives hope for a better tomorrow.

  1. Aw, birds. I love the sound of them. This hymn reminds me of church also- but from just a few years ago.
    Great photography and a great reminder of God’s love.
