It’s no secret that our “puppy” is spoiled. It’s also no secret that he’s no longer a puppy. In fact, he’s actually 14-years-old. He has various older dog issues, so we do all we can to make his life enjoyable and a little easier. That means that on many days I’m carrying our sweetie up and down the stairs. It also means less sleep at night as he needs to go out more frequently. As you can see, adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. Way back when we first adopted him from the humane society, we honestly didn’t know everything that we were getting into, but we wouldn’t change a thing.
As Munchkin and I headed to Walmart to do our shop, I couldn’t help thinking back to when we first laid eyes on our pup. We went to the humane society “just to look”, and we ended up falling in love. He didn’t come home with us that day as he still needed to have a few medical things taken care of before we could adopt him. Once we got him home, we quickly found out that he didn’t like to be away from us, and he was a little escape artist. Through the years, we’ve had ups and downs. Yep, owning a dog is definitely commitment not to be taken lightly, but it’s also a beautiful, rewarding thing.
A little over a month ago, we visited some of the humane society dogs that were waiting to be adopted. The cute puppies usually don’t have an issue being adopted, but the sweet older dogs struggle to find new homes. (And yes, it’s very difficult for me to walk away from a dog in need, but we can’t make that time or financial commitment at this time.) We thought it would be nice to create a welcome to doggie ownership kit for someone that wasn’t adopting a puppy. All dogs need homes, and all new owners need certain basic supplies. We made our list and set out shopping.
We were given the mission to purchase Milk-Bone® Dog Treats, Milo’s Kitchen Treats, and Pup-Peroni Treats as well as select a variety of items to be used to create the new dog owner kit. Munchkin and I love looking in the pet section, so this was a fun mission for us. We couldn’t find the Milo’s Kitchen Treats at the first Walmart, so we headed to the other local Walmart to finish up our shopping.
Our normal Walmart had a great selection of Milk-Bone® Dog Treats including bones for little dogs all the way up to really big dogs. Before our dog needed to go to allergy-free dog treats, these were a regular staple around our house. We added a couple of boxes to our cart for the dog care kit.
It’s been some time since we’ve looked at Pup-Peroni treats, so I was surprised to see that they now how a jerky variety which was allergy friendly. You guessed it. The Pep-Peroni jerky treats were added to the cart. **grin**
Milo’s Kitchen Treats are a favorite around here. Our dog loves the meatballs. I feel good about giving him these treats because they are a good for him. Yes, they are a little more expensive than some of the treats on the market, but you’re paying for a higher quality ingredient. It’s basically health food for dogs. The only thing that would be better is being able to buy in a larger quantity.
After we finished up looking at the dog treats, it was time to look at some of the other necessities. We checked out the leashes and collars. I was a little bummed not to see any “chain” leashes as some dogs (like ours) like to chew through their leash, but other than that, Walmart had a good selection. They even had some multi-packs which included 2 adjustable collars and 1 leash. They had these in a variety of sizes.
Hmm… checking over the list. We need to grab food and water bowls.
Now it’s time for our favorite thing… toys! Our dog has a nice basket (okay – 2 baskets, one upstairs & one downstairs) of toys because we’re suckers when it comes to cute toys. They had a wonderful selection in all price ranges. We knew that we wanted a few different items including a Kong treat toy. The Kong toys are a little more expensive, but they are very durable. They can also provides hours of entertainment when you add the treats.
On the way out, we saw these coupons on the Milk-Bone® treat boxes, so we added a few more treats to our basket. There will also be some Milk-Bone® Dog Treats coupons in the December 11 newspaper. You can see more pictures from our Walmart shop in our Milk-Bone® Dog Treats Holiday Shop google+ album. Pictures from our completed new dog kit will be coming soon.

Isn’t it funny how quickly you learn with that new pup. So excited you were able to find coupons. I can’t wait to see your final gift put together
I was thrilled to find coupons. 🙂 We always say that our pup was our training for having a baby. lol!
What a sweetheart! My furry boy has a favorite from his puppy days, too, but rawhide is not saved – he has strong feelings about that! 🙂 What a wonderful post! Thank you so much for sharing it!

The large rawhide bone was probably the only rawhide that he didn’t eat. He was even known for swiping rawhide treats from our neighbor’s dog or my sister’s dog when we visited. 😉
I love it, I only wish my pooch could come shopping with me 🙂 This is so much fun!
