Last year, we had the opportunity to review the fun game Wits & Wagers Family edition from North Star Games which our family has enjoyed playing. Well, North Star Games has created yet another great family (or group) game – Say Anything Family Edition – where there are no wrong answers. Sound interesting? We thought so as we sat down to read the instructions.
First Impressions:
I totally appreciate that all the pieces are self-contained in the box for easy storage. A ziploc-style baggie is included to store the smaller game tokens. The game comes with everything you need to play including nice dry erase markers. (I appreciate the nice dry erase markers as it’s frustrating when games/products that need dry erase markers come with junk markers or no markers at all.) The instructions are full color and easy to follow.
Game Play:
The game comes with – 60 question cards which contain 360 topic questions, 6 dry erase answer boards, 6 black dry erase pens, 1 select-o-matic 6000, 12 player tokens, 1 dry erase score board, and 1 set of full color instructions. The game begins by everyone selecting an answer board and corresponding tokens as well as picking the score keeper. The youngest player goes first.
One person during each round will be the judge and receive the select-o-matic 6000. They do not participate in answering the questions during that round. A card is drawn and any question from that card is read out loud. (Remember, there are no right or wrong answers due to the nature of the questions. You’ll see questions such as: “Which sport is the most fun to play?” or “What would be the worst fruit to sit on?”) Players then write their answers down on their dry erase boards and place them face-up on the table for everyone to read. The judge picks his/her favorite answers and records his/her decision on the select-o-matic then places it face down on the table. Players then try to determine which answer the judge picked and place their tokens on that pick. (You can pick up to two different answers since you have 2 tokens.) The round is then scored according to the rules and recorded on the score board.
Play continues until everyone has asked 2 questions. The person who scores the most points wins.
Our Thoughts:
Say Anything Family Edition is a fun, light-hearted game that’s great for all ages. The age recommendation is 8+, but kids younger than that could easily join in on the game play. If you have more than 6 players, you could play in teams – if desired. We liked that this game didn’t involve lots of preparation. It was nice to be able to sit down in the evenings and just play a game that was fun and didn’t require much mental input.
Let me give you a glimpse into our one evening of play…. Munchkin really wanted to play, but both D and I were quite tired. In addition, I was trying to meet a project deadline on the computer, so my focus really couldn’t be completely on a complicated game. We agreed to play a shorter version of Say Anything Family Edition. With only 3 players, we decided to only use 1 token per person instead of the normal 2 tokens. We took our turns and laughed and laughed about some of the answers, but it wasn’t until my turn to ask the question that the real fun began. I picked my card and asked the question. It was something like “What am I thinking right now?”. Munchkin and D quickly wrote down their answers. This is what they wrote:
Munchkin: “Ha Ha Ha – type, type, type”
Daddy: “I’m glad this game is almost over”
Now, keep in mind that I’m not really a game person, but Munchkin and D both like games. I will play with them, but the truth is that my heart isn’t always in the games. (Just keeping it completely real here.) D’s answer cracked me up, but it was Munchkin’s answer that had me rolling. For once, D’s answer was actually wrong because I hadn’t even been focused on the time the game was taking or even where we were at in the game. Nope, the game play was so fun and easy that I didn’t mind playing at all. Munchkin’s answer ended up winning that round. lol!
Say Anything Family Edition is a hit around our house for everyone – myself included. It’s a welcome addition to our Family Game Night or for just a quick end to a crazy day.
Please note: There are two different versions of Say Anything – the family edition (brand new) and the regular edition. This review is for the family edition. I do not know what the questions are like on the regular version, so please keep that in mind when you are making purchase decisions. The Say Anything Family Edition retails for $19.99.
I received a copy of Say Anything Family Edition as a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew to help facilitate the writing of a frank and honest review. A positive review is not guaranteed, and all opinions are my own.
We had a lot of fun with Wits and Wagers! Say Anything sounds good too!
