An Afternoon Drive – Desert Style

Desert DriveProject 365 – #240

When we head out into the desert, we always make sure we have plenty of water and some food.  In the hot summer months, we always make sure the air conditioning is working before we head out as the temps can be in the 110+ range.  It’s hard to imagine what the Israelites must have gone through while living in the desert for 40 years.  (Yes, it was a different desert landscape, but it makes me understand more of the hardships that they may have encountered living in a dry land.) They were disobedient/doubtful, yet, the Lord continued to take care of them.  Are we so different?  We’re often disobedient and even doubtful about the paths laid out before us, but the Lord continues to take care of us.  We have food, water, shelter, and even more importantly eternal salvation.

Living in a desert environment has given me a better appreciation for many of the passages that I’ve read lately in the Bible.  While living on the East Coast, we were always near water, and there was usually a good bit of rain.  Here, there is very little water in the land and even less rain.  Water is so valuable which makes Jesus, The Living Water, even more precious.  It is He who gives us eternal life.

Our idea of going out for an afternoon drive is obviously a little different than the traditional Sunday drive, but it is no-the-less enjoyable.  It gives us an opportunity to talk about a variety of different topics.  Many an interesting, deep conversation has presented itself while out in the desert on an afternoon drive.

  1. When we lived in Sedona I rarely remember using the windshield wipers and don’t think we owned an umbrella! Good insight into God’s care.
