It seems that a new year lends itself to reorganizing the house. We’re already putting away Christmas decorations, and we’re on a bit of a break from the normal day-to-day routine. It’s the perfect time to dive into getting things more organized. After all, we do need to find new homes for the goodies that we received as gifts, and we need to say goodbye to some items that are no longer needed.
Today, I spent some time organizing our storage closet. The Christmas bins received new labels and many things were pulled out of the closet. I set those boxes and bags aside as I didn’t want to get side-tracked from my main objective. Munchkin and I will go through those boxes and bags while watching a movie or two. I found a few things that I hadn’t seen for ages.
I took a break from the closet to go tackle some purging in our classroom area. This will be the new home for some of Munchkin’s new American Girl items, so I really needed to go through and get rid of all of the stuff that she has outgrown. Unfortunately, that meant saying goodbye to some books. I hate getting rid of books, but it’s a necessary evil.
I immediately took several boxes out to the truck. I have a couple more that need to be taken out, but I’ll allow D to assist me as they are a bit heavy. While I was working upstairs, Munchkin was working downstairs at organizing movies and games. She also started to sort through a few piles that had developed during the Christmas break.
Overall, we had a productive day. Tomorrow will hold more of the same – purging and organizing. Hopefully, everything will soon have a home. I plan on moving some of the less messy craft things upstairs as some of the paper crafting supplies have taken over the dining room area. First, I need to make room upstairs. The last thing on my to-do list is tackling the re-organization of my sewing room. I’m afraid that all of my projects have left the room a bit messy.
Do you see the new year as a chance to get organized? Do you prefer bins or boxes? With all of our moving, I’ve found bins to be a much better storage solution for us as they are more durable.

You’ve gotten a lot of work done! I’m in declutter and organize mode. I downsized our bedding to two sheet sets per bed and with nine beds in our house we had a lot of extra sheets! I feel so much lighter mentally after moving stuff out of our home.
I prefer bins because they hold up better to stacking and restacking and keep things dry. We had a whole shed full of stored boxes get wet when the roof leaked and had to throw out many moldy items.
