Reading Together

Posted in Family

BrisingrWhile D was deployed last time, Munchkin and I found ourselves reading many books together.  I would real out loud to her while she colored, worked on puzzles, rested…  We would read short books and long books.  Some books took several days of almost non-stop reading to finish.  Those were the types of books that we just didn’t want to put down because we wanted to know what happened next.

After Daddy came home, we stuck mainly with short books that didn’t involve long periods of reading.  We had so much going on that reading the longer books fell on the back burner.  Then we moved here.  Munchkin got busy playing with her friends.  On occasion, we would read together, but it wasn’t like those days while Daddy was gone.

This week, Munchkin found herself without any friends to play with as they were out of town for various reasons.  She pulled out a book, a long book, for me to read to her.  We spent most of the day on Friday reading.  Today has been filled with lots of reading.  We’ll tackle a task and then head back to the book.  Sometimes Daddy will listen in and other times he’ll work on his own projects.  (Daddy has already read the book – Munchkin and I have not.)

By reading certain books aloud to Munchkin, I am able to skip over words and scenes that I deem inappropriate for her at this point in time.  Right now, we are reading the 3rd book in the Eragon series.  Munchkin decided that she wanted to read the books after seeing the movie.  Not knowing what the books contained, I decided that I would read them to her.

We read the first 2 books while Daddy was gone.  Munchkin liked them, so Daddy read them when he came home.  When the 3rd book came out, we purchased it, and Daddy took it with him on a trip to read.  Munchkin and I didn’t get around to starting the “new” book until this past Friday.  It’s been sitting there, but we just needed to find the time to read together.  We knew that once we started the book that we would want to keep reading.  We were right.

My throat hurts from reading out loud for so long, but I enjoy reading to Munchkin.
