Read to Me: Results

Posted in Family, and Homeschooling

The Read to Me has come to a close. We were asked to summarize our results in a post.

We accomplished out goal of getting back on track with reading. This mission/contest helped motivate us to get started with our reading again. It’s so easy to allow life to get in the way of reading and let the t.v. take control. We need to make time for reading and family. It’s fun to sit down and read together as a family. Kids love being read to even when they know how to read themselves. It can be a special time of bonding for your family.

In order to achieve our goal of reading together each evening, I personally needed to make time to read to my daughter. It was as simple as that. It meant taking a break from whatever I was doing and sitting (or cuddling) with her to read.

For individual reading, I had to, once again, take a break from what I was doing and make munchkin take a break from whatever she was doing. We started off by scheduling reading time each day, but we ended up just making sure we were reading at some point during the day. We also had to go pick up library cards from the new library so we could check out some books.

My daughter loves the time and attention that she receives when we read together before bed. It really does help calm her down and prepare her mind/body for sleep mode. With Daddy being gone, I could really see a difference in the evenings that I forgot to read before bed. She did much better on those nights that we had that special one-on-one time before she fell asleep.

We plan on continuing to read together each evening. Although we didn’t read Narnia as planned (since I forgot to bring it with us), we have been enjoying reading the American girl books together. We read a chapter each evening.

Yes, it really is as simple as just making time, but it’s not all that easy in reality, so good job for doing it.

I really love sharing the AG books too, because they are short easy read-alouds, but the stories are so interesting and clever.
