The CrossmakerSee the Light – Drawing Children to Him

The Crossmaker
Volume One: Stories of God’s Love in Action

See the Light Product Description:

Created by author and educator Pat Holt, and produced by Parking Lot Production’s Kip Perry (Disney, ABC, “Guideposts Junction,” “A Distant Thunder”), See The Light is a series where Bible stories come to life as gifted artist Gloria Kohlmann develops a colorful canvas of chalk art. Then, at the story’s climax, an ultraviolet light reveals a hidden picture that reinforces the story with a truly memorable moment. The companion DVD elements and web-based curricula allow children to draw along with Kohlmann bringing the Bible stories to life.

Other DVD components include a creative and dramatic presentation of the plan of salvation called “Know the Light” and an immersive and worshipful multi-sensory segment featuring original music called “Celebrate the Light,“ making the DVD perfect for co-viewing with parent or teacher and child.

Featured online are downloadable drawing lessons and an exclusive art club, where children will be exposed to various art techniques. The creativity continues as draw-along printouts extend the fun and learning beyond the DVD. This series is appropriate not just for families at home but also as supplementary curriculum in churches and schools.

My Thoughts:

The Crossmaker DVD pairs wonderful story telling and beautiful chalk drawings.  After the main stories about Dominic and Jesus with the Children, the kids are given the opportunity to learn how to draw with chalk in the Celebrate the Light portion of the dvd. In the Know the Light portion, children are presented the salvation message in an easy to understand manner. In Draw the Light, children are shown how to draw with chalk and surprised when black light reveals a special image.  Free supplemental resources are available for printing on the website.  Additional online classes (art club) can be purchased to further the learning (free trial available).

Munchkin thought the chalk drawings were cool, but she was disappointed that there wasn’t more instruction on doing the drawings herself.  She felt the style of stories on this dvd was better suited to younger children.  (She wanted more “meat” for the story.)

The Crossmaker dvd took me back in time to when I sat as a young child and watched someone do similar chalk drawings while telling us Bible stories.  I was always fascinated and thought the black light finale was way cool.  I believe this dvd would be great in a children’s church or Sunday school classroom.  It would also work nicely for a homeschool family.

**Homeschool Convention Special**

You can purchase the DVD for $10 or the DVD set (includes DVD, black light, and fluorescent chalk) for $15.  With each purchase, you can see three webisodes of the “YES! You Can Draw Club” for free.  Each weekly webisode art lesson in 10 minutes in length, with a suggested follow-up assignment.  If you wish to continue with the art club, it $4.99 per month (4 ten-minute lessons).

I received a copy of The Crossmaker dvd and cd for the purpose of an honest review. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.
