“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took on of his ribs, and closed up the flesh at that place. And the Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. and the man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”
For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:18, 21-24
It’s easy to get caught up in the world’s view of marriage (“it’s all about me, my needs, my wants”), but that is not what the Lord saw when He created the institute of marriage.
- God created woman as the helper to man.
- God gave us equal but different roles within our marriages.
- God told us to create our own family and not cling to former relationships.
I am created as a helper to D. Focusing on D’s wants and needs allows me to fulfill the role that God intended for me in our marriage. Embracing this role has given me the freedom to find joy in taking care of my family.
We need to stop asking, “what can my spouse do for me?” We need to instead ask, “what can I do for my spouse?”
