Well, today is the first day of summer, so the Spring Reading Thing is officially over. It’s hard to believe that spring has gone and summer is here. I had no problem finishing up the non-fiction reading list that I posted. I enjoyed each of the books as they all offered various helpful tips on green housekeeping/cleaning as well as green gardening/lawn care. The more we can stay away from toxic chemicals, the better.
But, alas, I never did get to the fiction books on my list. Obviously, I do much better at reading non-fiction for myself. That’s not to say that we didn’t enjoy some fiction around here… This week, we wrapped up our reading of the complete Little House on the Prairie series. We also read a few short books here and there. (I really should start keeping a book list, so we can see everything that we read in a year. I’m sure it would be quite interesting.) I seem to spend my “fiction time” reading together with Munchkin.
We have also begun our summer reading… After setting aside the Narnia series for about a year (books were misplaced during the move), Munchkin has decided to start reading the series on her own. (We originally started the series together and read one chapter a day.) So, those will be the books that she reads on her own before bed. Yesterday, we began the book Eragon together. I had originally planned on pre-reading it, but decided that we would go ahead and read it together as she was very excited about it. I’m sure that will take some time as it is a long book. She knows that if I decide that it’s not a book for us then we’ll just stop reading it.
The summer reading program has also started at the library. Although she doesn’t really need the extra incentive to read, she enjoys these programs. The librarians tend to look at us funny as it doesn’t take very long for her to earn the prizes. They need to read (or be read to) for 10 hours and 30 minutes to fill out a sheet. Since we usually read for around 3-4 hours a day, it doesn’t take us very long to fill out the sheet. (I read to her for at least an hour in the morning and then an hour in the evening. She reads for about an hour and a half before bed.)
Needless to say, there has been a lot of reading for fun at this house.
Your blog is so pretty. And your reading list so inspiring. I love to read, too, and non-fiction definitely catches my eye more quickly.

This post sounds like something I could have written years ago about our youngest daughter. My most recent blog post is about childhood and reading. Brooke, our youngest, now age 16, ‘loved’ the summer reading program at the library. She certainly didn’t need the extra incentive to read either, but loved paritipating in it just the same. I think it was the summer she was 12, that she read 100 books. Yeah, she mentioned it in her March 11th blog post on her blog at http://joyfulwashingtonbrook.blogspot.com.
If Munchkin loves adventure fiction, read the Swallows & Amazons series by Arthur Ransome. These are the books I posted about. Such treasures, so wholesome!
Blessings!!! 🙂
Sounds like you did a great job, and got plenty of reading done this spring! And reading with kids is great — you’re forming wonderful memories!
