Change in Plans

Posted in Homeschooling, and Thoughts

We use the Weaver curriculum in our homeschooling and LOVE it, but we’re taking a little break from it for a little bit. We started the Prairie Primer this week.

The Prairie Primer is a unit study based on the Little House series. Grandma was kind enough to give munchkin the complete Little House series, so we have them available. We were also able to find the Little House cookbook, so that should be a fun addition.

So, today, we started our new adventure into Laura’s life. The most interesting thing that we learned today was that they used the hog’s bladder as a balloon/ball. We were learning a bit about preserving food. Munchkin was amazed at how much they had to go through to preserve their food for the winter. I use the freezer a lot for preserving around here, so that was a bit of a new concept.

We’re also learning, together, more about Celiac disease. We picked up a book called Eating Gluten-Free with Emily. It’s a cute kids story about little girl who has celiac’s disease. Munchkin enjoyed reading it to me. We also checked out Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids. Munchkin is having a blast picking out recipes to try. She’ll be attempting to make some of them by herself. She was making up an ingredient list, so we know what we’ll need to pick up from the store.

I hope to be able to do a few sewing projects together that go along with the prairie theme as well as some other fun projects to make the prairie time period more real for her. I’m not sure how much we’re going to accomplish as many know the best laid plans don’t always go as expected.

That sounds like so much fun – I’d love to be one of your students!!

Did you ever see that show on PBS where families live like the pioneers did – they sign up for it – but it is really interesting to watch. I don’t know the name of it, but if you wanna know more – let me know!!
