Jess (American Girl) Book Review

Posted in Reviews

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go on an archaeological dig? Well, Jess is a 10-year-old girl who gets the experience of a lifetime when her parents take her to Belize with them for an archaeological dig. This is her first time going without her siblings; they stay home with their grandma as they have too much going on at school to leave for several months.

During the trip, Jess is “homeschooled”. Her teacher put together all the work that she needed to do while she was gone, and Jess works on it pretty much each day. Her parents are pretty busy, so they have very little time to spend with her. She is left to entertain herself which leaves her pretty lonely until she meets a new friend.

At the end of the book, you are introduced to a real girl who has experienced going to archaeological digs with her parents. It was interesting seeing the real life “Jess”.

My daughter and I enjoyed reading this book together each night before bed. My daughter always wanted me to read just one more chapter, but, usually, we limited it to one chapter. While this is a book that she could have easily read by herself, she enjoyed the extra one-on-one time.
