Hospitality in Our Heart

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.
You are serving the Lord Christ.
~Colossians 3:23-24~

When you’re not feeling well or you’re feeling a bit down, it’s not easy to want to serve others.  Jesus didn’t tell us to help others only when we felt like it.  He told us to work heartily, and He was our example.  There were times that I’m sure He would have liked to walk away from the crowds of people because He was exhausted or tired of hearing requests over and over again, but He continued to help.  Even in His darkest hour on the cross He was serving others – not only by being willing to take on all of our sins, but also by reaching out and asking forgiveness for those who trespassed against Him.

Sometimes, you can’t just open up your home to others due to health issues or other things going on in your life, but you can always open your heart to help/serve others.  If you’re unable to leave your home, you can become a prayer warrior for others.  You can send emails and/or letters of encouragement to people.  You can leave a note of encouragement on someone’s blog or facebook page.  If someone is really struggling, I like to look for a scripture passage that may give comfort, strength, hope….

We (me included) often get so caught up in what is going on in our lives that we forget to actively seek ways to lift up others.  Sometimes that little smile or note of encouragement can be all it takes to give a spark of hope – a touch of joy – to that other person’s day.  Instead of looking for excuses why we can’t to this and that, we need to embrace our place in life and seek out ways that we can encourage others.

We need to show hospitality in our hearts….

  1. Yes, well said. For me, I sometimes struggle with that hospitality for my own family. It’s so easy to wave them off when I’ve got a headache or to get annoyed when it seems like I’m dispensing endless cups of milk.;0) Thank you for the reminder.
