DIY Pallet Chicken Coop Part 1

Posted in Family, and Homesteading

When D said I could have chickens, I got super excited and immediately started planning the coop. We looked at those small coops at the feed store, but I honestly couldn’t justify the expense given how small they were. The materials were also not the best quality. The convenience aspect was certainly a draw as I would have a coop with small run within a couple of hours, but I passed. One thing that I really wanted with this chicken experience was too keep the cost down while still having a quality, secure coop. The coop also needs to be…

Our Chicken Adventure Begins

Posted in Family, and Homesteading

Much to my surprise and delight, D gave the go-ahead on bringing home some chickens. We’re using an old wood storage cabinet that we picked up for free as the brooder box. It’s a good size for our 6 chicks. Since we picked up the chicks at Tractor Supply, we’re not sure of the breed, but they are all supposed to be pullets. I guess we’ll find out if we really did get 6 girls as they grow up. 😉 I’ve been wanting chickens for a long time, so I’m excited about this new adventure. For now, the chicks are…

DIY Jeep Clutch Extension

Posted in Family, and In the Garage

Driving a manual transmission Jeep – especially an older style – can be interesting when you have shorter legs. For my Jeep, the clutch has to be pushed all the way to the floor for it to engage which is rather difficult for this 5’2” person with shorter legs. It’s even difficult for Munchkin who has longer legs. I could reach if I put a pillow behind my back, but even then, I had to use my tippy toe with a completely straight leg. I was also too close to the steering wheel for my comfort, and D certainly didn’t…

Cabin Update: Shower

Posted in Family

We finally finished up the tiling in the bathroom shower during our time at the cabin. I can say, without a doubt, that I do not like tiling. lol! Doing grout – especially on those lovely river rocks – is also pretty low on my remodeling fun list. 😉 That being said, we are happy that the shower came together as we pictured. We still need to do some finish work like caulk and trim. We also need to eventually put up the glass panels, but we may just put up a shower curtain for now. The good news is…

Our DIY Rustic Wood Gate

Posted in Family, Homemaking, and Homesteading

One of the things that was on our “to-do” list for our next visit to the cabin was putting up a fence for the dogs. Now, we didn’t want to spend a ton of money, and we needed something that was easy as the ground is hard at the cabin. We looked at our different options, and just decided on t-posts and some cattle fence. The only issue was that I didn’t want to use a cattle or chain-link gate. I wanted something that looked nice. We finally decided that we would just make our own gate, so we could…
