Learning about Homesteading

Posted in Family, and Homesteading

As we move closer to D’s retirement years (well, retirement from the military), we’re starting to really give serious thought to where we want to live as well as how we want to live. We’re making decisions about living near civilization or living off-grid. In northern Arizona, where we’re seriously looking to settle, living off-grid or at least partially off-grid is the norm. We’re looking at the costs associated with hauling in water where wells aren’t always an option. We’re comparing costs associated with heat such as fire wood, propane, and natural gas. We’re researching solar power and generators. Whew!…

Tissues, Toilet Paper, and Cardboard Tubes?

Posted in Family

My dogs are a little crazy. In many households, one dog will have some crazy quirk, but it’s not shared by his canine companions. That is not the case at our house. Our two pups share almost all of their crazy quirks. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that they feed off each other’s quirks which ultimately makes it appear like they’re trying to out do each other. Did I mention they’re a little crazy? Today, they were fighting over a cardboard tube (you know from toilet paper or paper towels?). They kept snagging the tube from…

Footprints in Your Heart

Posted in Family, and Military Life

Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart. ~author unknown~ Munchkin enjoyed spending some quality time with her friend on Friday before they said their goodbyes. It was an extremely tear filled goodbye, and it broke this mama’s heart to see the girls hurting so much. Daddy and I took it upon ourselves to side track Munchkin by having a family movie night. Unfortunately, when we headed out to grab the movie and snacks, I ended up missing my opportunity to say goodbye to my friend. **sigh** Thankfully,…

Trying to Stay Focused

Posted in Family, and Military Life

It’s turned into a huge school zone around our house. Munchkin is working on her classwork. I’m working on my photography classwork. Daddy is working on his military classwork. It’s weird having all of us working on different classes, but it’s also a wee bit funny to see us all trying to focus on the task at hand. With Munchkin’s best friend and her family moving this week, staying focused has been much more difficult. She wants to spend as much time with her as possible before they say goodbye on Friday. For this reason, I gave her today off from…

Learning How to do an Oil Change

Posted in Family, and In the Garage

Daddy believes very strongly that Munchkin needs to know how to do regular vehicle maintenance. Today, he decided it was time for Munchkin to learn to do a complete oil change on her truck. It’s the first oil change since getting the truck. One thing that we’ve found since Munchkin purchased the project truck is that regular maintenance was obviously not a top priority for previous owners. Daddy plans on changing that fact as he wants Munchkin to learn how to take pride in maintaining her own vehicle. Part of that process is getting to know her vehicle by reading…
