My Daughter – The Illustrator

Posted in Homeschooling

For my latest notebooking pages project, Munchkin is making the illustrations for me. We couldn’t find any free illustrations that we really liked to go along with the theme, so she offered to do some sketches for me. She was tickled pink when I told her that I would credit her with the illustrations on the pages. Because of this, the Dragons of the Deep notebooking pages are probably going to be my favorite pages to date. There is something special about working on a project with your daughter. I admit that I have the easier job with the project.…

Learning about a Filibuster: History in Action

Posted in Homeschooling

Wednesday morning, March 6, 2013, at 11:47 am EST, Senator Rand Paul started a talking filibuster in Congress. Being a homeschooler, this quickly became an opportunity to teach Munchkin about a filibuster and discuss what was going on in Congress today. I explained to her that the Senator had to remember to say, “without yielding the floor” every time he wanted to allow questions or supporting remarks because he had to hold the floor to maintain the filibuster. That also meant that he wasn’t allowed to take any bathroom breaks which made his filibuster even more impressive. What is a…

Signers of the Declaration of Independence Notebooking Pages

Posted in Homeschooling

Once Munchkin finishes up with Mystery of History Volume 3, we’ll be starting a study of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence as well as a study of the Declaration of Independence itself. For our studies, we’re going to be using For You They Signed by Marilyn Boyer as the spine and then add in some other books and resources. (We had originally received this book as a review item and started using it as part of her history curriculum, but after studying a few of the men, we decided that to truly get an in-depth study we needed…

Back Issues Times Two

Posted in Family

It’s no secret that D has had a lot of back issues over the past few years – basically since his last deployment. The 2 back surgeries took their toll, but at least he’s doing better. The pain is still there, but it’s generally on a decent level. (The pain will, most likely, never go away completely. It’s the nature of the beast so to speak.) He’s still working on getting back into form to be able to have better endurance and strength. His muscles just aren’t what they were prior to the surgeries. Building them back up takes time…

Romanesco – The Alien Vegetable

Posted in Gluten Free, and Homemaking

Our organic Bountiful Baskets order for 3/2/13 was filled with all kinds of goodies this week including Romanesco, Leaf Lettuce, Baby Broccoli, Cilantro, Celery, Red Potatoes, Red Swiss Chard, Bananas, Apples, Mangoes, Grapefruit, and Blueberries. Now, I’ve never cooked Romanesco, but I read that is was kind of like cauliflower, so I started throwing together a variety of items from the basket this week as well as a few leftovers from last week. I used the red potatoes, brussels sprouts, garlic, Romanesco to create a very healthy dish. The creation looked quite green, but it tasted delicious. Romanesco is rich…
