Valentine’s Day Ideas

It’s February which means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. I know, some of you will say, but I have plenty of time before Valentine’s Day. Well, we all know how quickly time flies, so I’ll just go ahead and post a glimpse into some of the ideas that we’ve used around our house on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is a fun day to show the people in your life that you love and appreciate them. We like to start off the day with little notes hidden all over the place in areas that our family members use on a regular basis (bathroom, kitchen, fridge, freezer, computer…)

I like to surprise my daughter by decorating the door to her room while she’s asleep. It’s fun to wake up to a Valentine’s surprise. A fun good bag on the door handle is always nice too. Maybe tuck a card inside?

In our house, food is also a big part of all celebrations and Valentine’s Day is no exception to that. Here are some of the things that we’ve done. Yum!

Start off breakfast with some stuffed heart-shaped French toast with heart shaped strawberries or maybe heart-shaped pancakes topped with fresh whipped cream and strawberries. Yum! Don’t forget a little note on the side.

Snack time can be fun with heart shaped cookies, brownies, rice krispy treats or cupcakes. Want something healthier? Why not make a strawberry, rose bouquet as featured on Family Fun. Want to skip the sugary stuff all together? Just make a yummy bouquet with all of your favorite fruits. See an example here.

Lunch can be fun with heart shaped sandwiches – just make up your favorite sandwich and cut it with a heart shaped cookie cutter. Heart shaped cucumbers (or other veggies) and dip are always a favorite around here. Once again, a little note can make anyone feel extra special.

Flowers are always nice, but I can’t see the point of spending big $$$ on flowers. Here’s a hint on how to have a great bouquet without spending a fortune. Thrift shops have tons of different vases. Grocery stores (or even Walmart) are great places to get inexpensive flowers that are absolutely beautiful. Place them in your thrift store vase and arrange. You now have a beautiful arrangement for less $$$.

I love having chocolate kisses and hugs around the house on heart shaped cut-outs. I usually have these in the freezer from when I stocked up after one of the holidays. I also like to put out heart shaped balloons. My daughter loves balloons, so I usually stock up on the heart shaped balloons after the holidays. Dollar stores sometimes carry these as well.

Dinner time is filled with the aroma of fresh baked chicken parm. I pick out 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts that look like a half of a heart. Once they are seasoned and cooked, I put them together in a heart shape. I place them on top of a bed of spaghetti w/marinara sauce. I put some sauce on the chicken breasts and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. I then place the casserole dish into the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly. It’s a fun presentation. (Obviously, with a bigger family, you will need more chicken breasts.) Heart shaped rolls or biscuits are a nice side.

If I’m really ambitious, I’ll make a yummy cheesecake and put strawberries on top in a heart shape.
