The Gift of Reading

Posted in Holidays

“Just a few more minutes, please!” “Can I finish the page?” “Can I finish the chapter?” “Can you read just a little more?”

These are common phrases heard around our house. From the time that Munchkin was in my womb, D and I read to her. She’s grown up in a house of readers. She was eager to learn to read on her own so she could enjoy books even when I couldn’t keep reading.

Now, even though she is old enough to read by herself, you can still find us curled up in bed reading together. Sometimes, we’ll read the book seperately and then discuss it after we’ve both read it. Other times, she’ll read the book and tell me all about it.

Last week, she came home after church and told me that she was talking with some of her friends. They told her that there were several kids in their class that couldn’t read (5th and 6th grade). She couldn’t believe these kids couldn’t enjoy reading their own books. It made her sad. She didn’t understand why their teachers weren’t teaching them this basic skill.

This lead to a conversation about the gift of reading. We both agreed that we are very grateful that we know how to read and that we can share that special time together reader and discussing books. Through reading, we can learn about many things, and we can go on many adventures. Through reading God’s Word, we can get to know our Saviour better; we can learn about His direction for our lives. We are grateful for the gift of reading.

The love of the gift of reading is one thing that I have given to our children.

I love reading, and books were my best friend while I was growing up, as I was frequently sick, and there's not much else that you can do in an oxygen tent.

    Have a wonderful week,
    Blessings,
