Wiley: First Walk Post Bilateral CCL Injury

Posted in Family

Life is crazy when you’re taking care of 3 dogs – especially when 1 dog has a serious injury and another dog is a puppy. It’s been an adventure trying to balance Wiley’s recovery with Wynoka’s puppy needs while continuing to give plenty of attention to Wyatt as well.

For the most part, the dogs all get along. Wiley is a little resentful of Wynoka as he wants to be able to play like she plays. He misses running around. During this whole process with him, he has gone through bouts of depression which has been really sad. He’s struggling with not being able to run around and be crazy.

Over the weekend, I finally had another set of hands to help with Wiley’s knee braces. Having D around made life much easier when it came to getting both knee braces on my patient. I was also able to properly get the second brace fitted. D could sidetrack him, so the process wasn’t nearly as much of a struggle.

Having him around also meant that I had another person to help with walking the dogs. For the first time, we took all three dogs out for a walk. Because Wiley is just starting his rehab, he can only walk for less than 5 minutes, and we have to closely monitor his walking to make sure he doesn’t overdo it.

Wiley was thrilled to be out and about. He missed going out and exploring. He perked right up and had pep in his step.

He even started pulling at one point which needed to be nipped in the bud as it needed to be a low key walk. He took in the sights and sounds all around him. In many ways, it was like he was a puppy out exploring again. Wynoka couldn’t decide who to walk with – Wiley or Wyatt – so she bounced back and forth between them. It didn’t make for easy walking, but it was a bit amusing.

It’s not possible for me to walk all the dogs at once, so those types of walks will have to be reserved for when D and/or Munchkin are home. I’m going to try to start taking Wiley for more regular short walks if I can get him away from the other pups while they’re not looking. **grin**
